Interesting article, and I think it's curious about the opposing viewpoints. In Canada our conservative party if a lot more progressive than the Republican party, so I can imagine there are a mix of viewpoints existing in the vegan/vegetarian community.

Other cultures, like in India, most vegetarians do it for more conservative reasons whereas in America vegetarians do it for more environmental and progressive reasons. I think culture could also be factor in the differences.
