Giving Up isn’t Embarrassing, and You Don’t Suck For It.

I’m tired of people frowning at failure. The other day, I read a Tweet from someone who said he thought it was tragic to see a freelancer go back to an office job. Because they failed and they “gave up.”

And naturally, I have a far different opinion.

I’ve given up plenty of times in my life.

Hell, giving up is my specialty! Change is empowering just as much as it is terrifying. And in my opinion, most of the time — change happens because it’s desperately needed.

Three years ago, I quit being a 911 operator. I wanted to keep that job and build up my savings because it paid me twice as much as any job I had ever had, but it just didn’t work out. And yes, technically, I gave up before I even finished the job training, but I knew I wouldn’t pass the final assessments.

It sucked, and I cried a lot over quitting that job.

But I made that decision for myself because I knew it was the right choice at that moment. Giving up isn’t a sign of weakness or failure. It’s a sign of growth and learning.

If I hadn’t “given up” that job or “given up” on a long-term relationship that had turned toxic — I wouldn’t be where I am right now. I would still be listening to a man who constantly told me I wasn’t good…
